MORELIA., Mich., Aug. 8, 2012. – The citizens’ movement YoSoy132 Morelia, is planning to erect a monument in honour of one of the greatest military leaders during the Mexican Revolution, Emiliano Zapata Salazar.
The team of Yosoy132 arts and culture experts developed the monument project for Zapata’s hundred and thirty-third birthday.
Benjamin Mendoza Madrigal, a spokesperson for the movement in Morelia, said, “we will send an official letter to municipal and state governments requesting a place for the monument. We intend to send out an open call for sculptors to participate in its creation.”
This project seeks to vindicate Emiliano Zapata’s struggle and to condemn state terrorism undertaken by the Mexican regime. It will stand against the privatization of natural resources and join in the battle declared against the mega for-profit industries, the causes of environmental degradation, in favour of repealing the amendment to section 27 of the Constitution.
The project is dedicated to the protection of the ejido against transgenic seed crops, the intermediaries in agricultural trade and mysterious disappearances of social activists and former political prisoners, calling for an immediate end to the atrocities the Mexican state and federal goverments in Michoacan state. It is also dedicated to the recent cases raised within the locality, like Luis Enrique Castañeda Nava, Diego Antonio Maldonado and Ana Belen Sanchez, who went missing in Paracho.
